Even if we set aside the centuries of restrictions on voting in places like the US—the property requirements, the racial requirements, the sex requirements, the age requirements, the citizenship requirements, etc—we still can’t pretend that *casting a ballot for someone else to make coercively-enforced decisions for you* constitutes democracy in the sense I outlined above.

Having some numerically insignificant say in which members of the elite class will rule you is not a synonym for democracy as consensual and voluntary community decision making.

The US is not a democracy in this sense. There never was a time when it was a democracy in this sense. Citizens United didn’t ruin US democracy. Lobbying and corruption didn’t ruin US democracy.
