Sure, but considering the difference in UI (Element can be quite hostile to non-technical users) and familiarity (many people really just want a clean Discord clone), Matrix still has a long way to go, if they even aim to be an alternative to Discord at all (I feel their direction might be towards Slack). Matrix also didn't really respond to challenges in moderating in a decentralized environment...
