Holiday can be stressful for many reasons. For some, the pressures of gift-giving and trying to make everyone happy can be overwhelming. For others, the prospect of spending time with family can be a source of stress. Whatever the cause, the holidays can bring on a great deal of stress that can be difficult to manage.

One source of holiday stress is the pressure of giving and receiving gifts. Shopping for gifts can be stressful when trying to find the perfect one to show someone how much they are appreciated. A person might also worry about giving too much or too little, or finding something that the person they are buying for will actually like. Likewise, receiving a gift can bring on stress because of the expectation to give something in return or worrying about what to do if the gift is something that the person will not use or appreciate.

Another cause of holiday stress is the pressure of family gatherings. Family reunions can be a source of stress because of differences in opinions or beliefs and the expectation to get along with everyone. For example, there may be an expectation from family members to adhere to certain familial traditions, which can be difficult if two people have conflicting views about such traditions. Additionally, family gatherings can bring out competition between siblings or relatives, which can lead to tension and awkwardness.

Finally, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can bring on feelings of stress. With so much to do and not enough time, a person might feel overwhelmed with the tasks they have to complete. From going to parties to planning a delicious holiday feast and all the preparations that come with it, a person can start to feel overwhelmed and stressed.

To manage holiday stress, the first step is to recognize that the stress is there. Acknowledging the stress and recognizing the cause can help to make it more manageable. The next step is to take action. Identify the source of stress and then come up with a plan to address it. For example, if gift-giving is causing stress, plan ahead and shop early to avoid last-minute rush; if family gatherings are a source of stress, come up with creative ways to reduce the tension; if the busyness of the holiday season is overwhelming, build in breaks and time for self-care.

Finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself mentally. Find ways to relax and enjoy yourself during the holidays. Spend time doing activities that bring you joy, appreciate the quality time you have with family and friends,
