Today I'm making lard from pig fat given to me by a farmer friend.

I start by cutting the fat into pieces and partially freezing them.


I got this meat grinder with sausage attachment from the thrift store for $15. It had never been used so I'm pretty please with the score.


Partially freezing the fat helps it go through the grinder easier, and after an arm workout I have a mountain of fat.


Next I put it all in a giant pot:

And the pot goes onto the stove on a low heat to melt the fat out of the connective tissues.

Once this is done, I will pour the liquid fat off into a different pot through a fine sieve to keep all the bits out.
