the culture of linux, and the reason it still exists, and is able to sustain itself, is that it is, basically, fully oriented around the goal of Making Linux. it lives and heals and evolves, and occasionally sprouts growths, even complete limbs, whose function appears to contribute towards making something other than linux. but these are spandrels, soon to slough off, piles of snakeskin in the rearview mirror. they were ornamental, merely a demonstration of Linux and those who Make Linux
