I think the reason wives working outside of the home is so enticing (even for their husbands), is because housewives are a partly redundant and marginal workforce.
They do the things that their husband doesn't have time to focus on, at that moment. The amount of that work done can fluctuate wildly over time, from 25% to 125%.
