Inside an igloo. This photo shows an Inuit woman and her family inside their igloo in the 1940s.

While depicted in popular culture as built from big "ice cubes", igloos primarily use compacted snow, which insulates and traps body heat, keeping the inside surprisingly warm even in freezing temperatures. These shelters can be cozy and effective, proving how resourceful people are at adapting to their environment. ❄️

Snow is used because the air pockets trapped in it make it an insulator. On the outside, temperatures may be as low as −45 °C (−49 °F), but on the inside, the temperature may range from −7 to 16 °C (19 to 61 °F) when warmed by body heat alone.
