It's so annoying to listen to adults complain about "inappropriate clothes/presentation by children". Things like wearing (heavy) makeup, scant clothing, etc.
1) Culture changes with every generation. One thing that's been consistent (at least in America) is each further generation becoming more confident in showing skin, expressing sensuality (often with a disconnect from sexuality), and experimenting with their appearance -- especially women, as they've been forced to cover themselves through a lot of history. We've seen this over and over again -- women used covered with long dresses and sleeves, then dresses got shorter and shorter, soon we were showing shoulders and stomach and nowadays as long as your junk is covered, you're pretty much free to wear whatever you want. We've even seen this with bikinis, going from full outfits, to tighter one pieces, to two pieces. I feel like it's just a natural progression of humans becoming comfortable with their own nature again in the absence of religious dogma.
2) "They're all wearing makeup and crop tops and booty shorts! They're trying to act like adults! They're growing up too fast!" Yeah, they're emulating the styles of the previous generation. Of course they "look like adults", they're copying how their parents look. That's how development WORKS. When they have their own kids, those kids will copy THEM, warped by new culture. Heavier makeup is more normalized now, skin is more normalized, alternative style is more normalized. Especially with the introduction of the internet -- culture is rapidly evolving. Gen X said the same shit about mellenials and gen Z is saying the same shit about gen alpha.
3) If clothes that show skin automatically make you think of sex, you probably have some soul searching to do. It's not inappropriate anymore to have a body that can be viewed. Yes, sometimes people dress scantily because they DO want sexual or romantic attention. But making that blanket assumption, especially about youth which you view as "innocent", is really odd. I know a lot of younger teen girls (by family proxy), and many of them wear short shorts, crop tops, makeup, perfume, and tons of jewelry. They don't do it to get stares from people. They do it because it makes them feel good in their bodies. THEY like how THEY look before anything else and that's really clear when you talk to them or hear them discussing clothes. Theres never any mention of "oh, I hope Bradley thinks my ass looks cute in this". If anything, it's more of just "woah my ass looks good in this >:]!"
There are some complaints I understand. Like ridiculous beauty routines and standards being promoted to youth, creating a pressure to conform that happens to all of us. Secondly, a lack of variety in young girls clothing, there should be longer/boxier shorts and shirts with cutesy designs (and vice versa, btw).
Anyways, just another Mutt Yap Session™ about shit that bothers me.
