Possibly my biggest gripe with the state of ham radio these days is the incredibly bad audio quality of common 2m/70cm digital radio modes. DMR, D-star, C4FM all sound horrible compared to a $20 Baofeng on an analog FM repeater.
Digital radio is like listening to a 15kbps RealAudio stream, if anyone here is old enough to remember that. It's crazy to me that this hasn't gotten any better yet in 2024. Surely there's enough cheap ubiquitous processing power available now to match analog radio on the same bandwidth...
