To do this has been a part of the "Bitcoin is not energy wasteful" argument for quite some time.
It's been argued that some of the currently unfeasible energy projects, for instance in Africa, hydroelectric dam builds and such could maybe be financed with bitcoin mining until the customers come online.
Guy (The Bitcoin Audible podcast) has good reads about this.
