My father had an NC lathe that read G-code punched tape. It didn't use ASCII or EBCDIC, either, apparently -- a six bit width character system instead. And if you made an error, to cancel an instruction you punched all the perfs on the row -- which was a strong incentive not to give your paper program tape a chance to break easily.
