I've got a friend who's a sponsored athlete and also a committed and vocal environmentalist. As such, they refuse new kit from their sponsor until they need it. The sponsor is currently rebranding so it's gonna become more apparent that he's wearing old kit. It's naïve to think that a company would survive only on 'need not want' purchases but it'd be refreshing for a brand to acknowledge and even play on the notion that say a Spring/Summer '19 collection t-shirt is still working just fine.
