I like to draw comparisons of this transition to the BIOS->UEFI transition from about ten years ago, where it took so long partly because all vendors had to make it invisible to the end-user what exactly was going on under the hood.
I think if we did try that, it would have taken astronomically longer than it already has to make this level of progress on wayland support.
Unfortunately, for now, the most "Unified" experience is still X11, but it's not like XWayland is particularly BAD
