In the 17th century, during the Golden Age, Amsterdam wasn’t just a hub for trade and tulips — it was a magnet for sailors, sex workers, and scandal. The Zeedijk area, right by today’s Red Light District, was known as “the sailors’ hell.” Taverns offered booze, opium, and anything else a weary sea dog might crave. Some bars even had trapdoors — if a customer got too drunk or rowdy, they’d literally drop him into the canal.

And here’s a weird twist: the Church taxed brothels. So technically, the clergy profited off sin — Amsterdam has always known how to balance vice with pragmatism.
