since I use gnus, I download the thread as a mbox from yhetil.org, open it in gnus and reply that way. You could also visit the newsgroup ephemerally but that can take some time if you haven't visited the server browser thingy in a long while.
This is usually not a problem unless people drop you from the CCs. In which case, you can ask them to not do it.
