26th highest isn't exactly nothing, and maryland has moderately repressive rules about gun ownership. coincidence? i think not. medium repression, medium violence.
in the countries where the repression is severe, people get bashed to death by fists, blunt objects and stabbed and the attackers know they likely won't get shot at. UK is one of the worst examples of this, they are practically about to ban butter knives it's that bad. Australia also has quite high levels of domestic violence and street violence in some of the places where there is a lot of immigrants from repressive cultures.
