What helped me is to click on those hashtags and follow those hashtags and any hashtags that seems to tangentially come up and seem interesting. Then, also follow any person posting to those hashtags that seem remotely like they're posting interesting stuff. Go for following at least 200 hashtags and people, and you will find that you will get more interesting folks and hashtags entering your timelime. I'm still trying to reach 500 people and hashtags to follow, but am picky!
