As near as I can tell, the phenomenon of there being a large number of people who were neither wealthy nor impoverished was a function of our economy's high point in the mid-20th Century. But then the wealthy started worrying that the middle class would get uppity and dangerous, they interpreted subsequent demands for more social justice and less pointless war as exactly that, and for decades since there's been a concerted effort to destroy that uppity "middle class".
