It is 0x7f here (urxvt Linux), but I _use_ terminals where it is ^H; in particular, it is ^H on many hardware terminals and over some remote access tools (I think PuTTY still defaults to ^H?). I have to fix this occasionally for students using Windows when pressing backspace on one of the university servers just happily prints ^H for them.
