What I've come to learn from Bethesda games is that some mods are just essential for gameplay/graphic enhancement and if you play vanilla, you're basically playing a downgrade.
I'd install mods. Now, I can't say anything as a Morrowind Enjoyer, as I haven't played Morrowind; I played Oblivion & Skyrim. So take my advice with a grain of salt.
