In an enterprise environment I wouldn't do that either, and non-standard ports just add unnecessary headache.
In the case of personal "bunch of self-hosted stuff":
1) logs should be stored, parsed by analyzers etc. and it's not free.
2) manual logs inspection sometimes is the easiest way to fix things as setting/maintaining proper monitoring/log analysis for all possible cases would take more time than fixing occasional quirks for the next 5 yrs or so.
