**RT @realchrisrufo:**
It's coming fast and furious: The SPLC has published two hit pieces against me today and is preparing another one for tomorrow, baselessly suggesting that my visiting fellowship with the Danube Institute in Budapest and subsequent writing about Hungary should be "filed with the Justice Department," in a clear attempt to weaponize the Biden Administration and silence my reporting.
In response, I sent SPLC operative @CreedeNewton (
https://nitter.moomoo.me/CreedeNewton) the following statement: "The SPLC is a left-wing smear machine, founded by an alleged racist and sexual harasser, that has zero credibility."1
Contrary to the SPLC's line of attack, which suggests that I somehow concealed my relationship with the Danube Institute or became a "foreign agent" by writing about Hungary, I publicly announced my visiting fellowship with the institute and disclosed this relationship in both of the pieces I wrote about my observations in Hungary, following standard journalistic practice. The Danube Institute did not have any editorial input in either piece, nor did it review anything prior to publication—again, standard practice to protect my journalistic independence. And, contrary to the SPLC’s insinuation, I was, in fact, critical of Hungarian state policy and economic corruption in my major essay for Compact.
This attack is nothing more than political intimidation. By the SPLC's bogus standard, every left-wing professor, journalist, and academic who has done a visiting fellowship anywhere outside the United States should also be investigated by the Justice Department—a notion that would deeply damage the First Amendment.
I loved my six weeks in Budapest and consider the men and women who work at Danube Institute to be friends. I refuse to cower before the left-wing smear machine.
The SPLC can pound sand.
