#writerscoffeeclub March 5th: Where do you see the future of publishing in ten years’ time?
Business is about risk management. Experimentalists and pulp writers have moved to self-publishing because it’s low risk and are doing well. There will continue to be a space for people who need a legal department, professional help, and top shelf authors worthy of a team approach. Self-publishing is in the late stages of a legitimization process while traditional publishing is restructuring after a monopoly. The transition will be complete when self-published work is included in literary prizes and traditional publishing is able to take more risks after a period of austerity. Books will always exist because they’re far lower risk than the screen. The major hurdle will be distribution as self-publishing continues to saturate the market while traditional publishing becomes more boutique. I have some thoughts on that but I’ll follow up in a comment.
