In 1943, Italian doctors Giovanni Borromeo, Adriano Ossicini, and Vittorio Sacerdoti invented the fictitious "Syndrome K" to protect Jewish refugees in their hospital from Nazi persecution.
They used this ruse to disguise healthy Jews as patients with a highly contagious and disfiguring disease, deterring Nazis from approaching and helping hospital staff identify refugees.
The doctors allocated special rooms for "infected" patients and encouraged Jewish children to cough to prevent Nazi inspections.
The doctors at Fatebenefratelli Hospital are believed to have saved between 25 and 100 Jews and political refugees. A
