Sorry I missed this. UNET was a user-mode TCP/IP implementation for IPv4. (The ARPANET switched over to TCP/IP from NCP on January 1, 1983.) It of course had to talk to Ethernet, etc., device drivers in the kernel. I had to adapt the standard 3B20 Ethernet driver to what UNET wanted. I no longer remember most of those details—it's been 40 years!—save for the fact that although it was written in C, the native language of the programmer was obviously FORTRAN.
