The most dangerous part of Justice Alioto’s zeal is that he genuinely & firmly believes he’s acting from absolute truth — truth that EVERYONE must ultimately accept in exactly the way he perceives it.
This is counter-Reformation, pre-Vatican II Catholicism in all of its traditionalist, patriarchal, misogynistic glory - the precise reason the Ecumenical Council was called in 1962.
There was no dissent possible, even thinkable, before Vat-II, just as now in Alioto’s mind there is no room for anything that is not 100% pure dogma - no room for scientific discoveries (as in sexual orientation), no room for personal conscience choice.
He must either conform his own conscience to the U.S. Constitution or resign his seat. The USA is not a theocracy.
