I've never been significant enough to be the centerpiece of anyone's mental illness, so I don't truly know what that is like. Being self-aware and just a tiny bit mentally ill, however, I have empathy for someone who loses the struggle. I lost a friend to it, and it pains me.
You should and must protect yourself from violence and sustained harassment, but tempering that with a desire to help when you can will afford you ample justification for servicing your self-interest. Be kind.
