It seems to me that civilization is fragile because it has so many dependent parts. It is easily lost by the pursuit of me-firstism, religious symbolism, or false hopes.
Anything which requires lots of things to work in synchronization to overlapping cycles like this will be both fragile and fairly resilient. It is fragile to humans, because if we decide to destroy it, it can be done easily.
