Thousands of people in the Philippines have moved to temporary shelters as a new typhoon approaches, just days after a typhoon and storm killed around 100 people, according to local authorities on Thursday. The National Weather Agency in the Philippines forecast that the typhoon, named Yenin, will make landfall on Thursday or early Friday, bringing winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour, and will pass through the province of Cagayan in northern Luzon, which has a population of around 1.3 million. At least 17,000 people from coastal areas in the province have moved to temporary shelters on Wednesday to protect themselves from potential flooding due to heavy rainfall in the region. "I expect more people to arrive, as the evacuation process is ongoing in several areas," said Rouille Rapsing, a disaster relief official. Meanwhile, disaster relief official Randy Nicola said that rescue teams in neighboring Ilocos Norte province are on standby to support local police, firefighters, and the military in rescue operations. Additionally, 500 people have been temporarily housed in Abra province. Schools in many areas in northern Philippines have been closed, and the government has put its agencies on high alert to provide immediate assistance if needed. In October, Typhoon Trami and powerful storm Kong-Rey killed at least 158 people in the Philippines, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
