Magnetic Fusion Plasma Engines Could Carry us Across the Solar System and Into Interstellar Space
The Expanse TV show depends on a hypothetical fusion drive to carry characters across the Solar System. Although this engine doesn't exist today, engineers have studied the physics of fusion drives, like the Bussard Ramjet, for decades. A new paper makes the case for a magnetic fusion plasma drive, which could provide a balance of thrust and efficiency to drive spacecraft to the farthest reaches of the Solar System and into interstellar space. A spacecraft would have a fusion reactor on board and then channel the plasma it produces into space using magnetic nozzles.
