I think Amdahl's law offers an explanation of why fully automated space communism seems like a possibility. There are some things on a trajectory resembling ever decreasing cost and labor, but perfecting the optimizations of those particular things doesn't give us much overall speedup. The bread toasting machine does its work quickly, but you didn't spend much of your life toasting bread in the first place. Meanwhile some big ticket items really aren't going to advance, like "raising children" which is pretty high on the list of how humans spend their time.
