npub1tj54dz997wrdyqgf8sc36z3upy3ld0ujmwqyx42dtqxcwc7l68fqlx5ry2 (npub1tj5…5ry2) phpBB is so versatile that it doesn't surprise me that it's still around. I used to run for many years and eventually even made my fork of it (nullBB). My humble Pentium 1 used to run a community with hundreds of active users. The only thing that stopped me was the hard drive on my Pentium 1 eventually getting fried (and, being a penniless bachelor student at the time, I certainly didn't have money for a backup disk).
Reddit killed those forums IMHO only because it provided a centralized platform where you could browse everything from the same account and the same domain. If only we had the old bulletin boards, but with some flavour of ActivityPub on top to allow content broadcasting, there would literally be not a single reason to keep using Reddit or any of its copycats.
