Yes. If we stick to some selected ones and republish the data pulled from other relays. The client as well as the relay load would reduce. Instead, the databases will grow on relays.
E.g.: a lot of people are following @jack but he is not on x, y & z relay. So the first user (x and y) would fetch the latest posts and republish them on x and maybe y. The second (z and y) doesn't see it on z but on y and so republishing it. The third user (x, y, z) can get it directly now from x, y, or z.
I'm also a fan of throwing away old posts - but having paid relay options with a larger retention time.
