you know what i find confusing? the fact that all the popular media released since 2020 - books, movies, tv shows - completely ignores the fact that there’s a pandemic. for a short while in 2020/2021 i think some soaps showed people with masks and stuff, while there were mandates, and that’s about it. most of the time, big world events kind of get shown in movies and shows, even those that don’t try to show “everyday life”. even the supernatural and horror and sci fi stuff mentions elections, wars, climate change, popular electronics, you know, the big things. but not the pandemic. in everything i have personally watched and read in the past 4 years, there has been not one single mention of the fact that this big world-changing event has taken place at all. it’s like all the media is now being made in an alternate dimension where sarscov2 never spread across the world and forever changed the way we understand viral infections, pushed whole groups of people to the very fringes of society, killed a bunch and disabled millions, and keeps making people sick, many several times a year.
fiction informs the way we see reality, and in this case, there’s this big huge thing that nobody in a position of power and influence seems willing to see or show at all
