I went to a STEM* themed sleep away summer camp that had a ham radio station (KB3BUM) and signed up for the license classes they offered.
I had no idea about radio when my parents gave me the brochure for the camp, my dad told me about being a CBer, when it was trendy in the 1970s and DXing. "Like that."
At camp, my elmer (WA6GFE) was retired from aerospace, designing antennas & worked on the VLA when Contact was filmed. Stories that got me fascinated with all things radio.
