For each chamber (six shot), you must load black powder, optionally a wad, a round or conical lead, then use the built-in ram rod to press the lead into the chamber and seal it. Then optionally add grease to the chamber to reduce the odds of chainfire.
Historically paper rounds were used which makes this slightly less laborious.
