I am not sure this quote is entirely apocryphal. The man was famous for his acerbic tongue, quick wit, and an economy for words. He is also simultaneously the most prolific/voluminous single author in history.
All that subsequent sanitizing (of both him and his words) most definitely plays into the idea that he might have not made such a quip.
