I'm challenged with presenting a protagonist's delusions -- he hasn't realized how distorted his perceptions of people are, because he's in denial about an essential part of his nature. And it's quite hard to portray his impressions in a way that also leaves space for the reader to draw different impressions.
So basically #1 but with less trust in him lol, more things like, describing facial expressions and body language that readers can have their own sense of.
