Sometimes, it’s way faster to hop off and run with your bike, even on flat terrain, when it’s really muddy or there’s a lot of sand in a turn. Trying to ride through those kinds of conditions can require a lot of effort and/or increase the likelihood of losing traction or control. Those kinds of mistakes can be costly in a close race. So, riders will take the more controlled running option if something is marginally rideable.
