'Anonymous' is used to mean something more powerful than just not having a real world name attached. What you're describing is more 'pseudonymous', though one could argue that messaging without encryption, over clearnet, on nostr, doesn't even fully achieve that.
I think earlier complaints about DMs were connected with NIP4 not being a well designed scheme.
