I take wrong turns and have to backtrack and try again. Characters go from vague strangers to fully fleshed individuals, and I find I must rewrite their earlier chapters to better express who they are.
I also use beta readers and critique partners. Having someone who understands the story you want to tell and offering suggestions on how to improve it is invaluable.
