Bitcoin Core developers have scheduled version 30 for October, dramatically expanding OP_RETURN data limits from 84 bytes to nearly 4MB by default. This ostensibly ends a heated year-long debate between ‘progressives’ like Antoine Poinsot and Peter Todd versus ‘conservatives’ led by Luke Dashjr and Bitcoin Mechanic, who argue Bitcoin should focus solely on financial transactions. While node operators can manually override the new settings, most will probably stick with defaults, effectively cementing the progressives' victory.
