It's even worse than that. A lot of artists I know, when working on a piece, will use (copyrighted) "inspiration images", which they look at *while they draw / paint it*, and you can very plainly see aspects of the inspiration images - actual works, not just (uncopyrightable) styles - in the final result.
So it's not just what they were "trained on", but explicit collaging-with-modification and new elements thrown in.
