I agree that focusing on task flows is important but I don't understand how calling that "experience" is wrong. Experience is nothing more than a collection of tasks?
As to 'always been this way" I have to disagree as well. The UX community was very robustly defined and in place from 1980-2015 or so when the "UX/UI" silliness started, which has confused the hell out of everyone, including recruiters.
