The Labour Party MP and Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell MP (Manchester Central) official X (formerly Twitter) account hijacked this week to promote a fake cryptocurrency, falsely branded as the “official” House of Commons coin - "$HCC" coin.
The posts featured official-looking imagery and encouraged users to invest in a so-called "$HOC" token, promising “transparency, participation, trust.” Clicking the link redirected users to a crypto investment site asking them to connect their wallets.
The misleading posts were quickly deleted, and Powell’s team confirmed “steps were quickly taken” to secure the account. A House of Commons spokesperson said Parliament takes cyber security “extremely seriously.”
The incident highlights growing concerns around crypto scams on social media that misuse public figures’ accounts to lend credibility to fraudulent schemes.
