So like if you're in Russia and you need to evade the government, use Yandex. If you're anywhere else in the world try to use a purpose-build Chatmail server.

So yes, you can use it witha regular email server that you control but it comes with tradeoffs: probably slower due to your spam filtering and reverse DNS validation, SPF checking, etc. You won't have push notifications without a Lua script that hooks into Dovecot and then calls a custom Python service. If you graft all the Chatmail related features into your server you can get 90% of the way there but like you obviously don't want the rule that blocks all emails unless they're encrypted, etc...

So yes, you can. You probably shouldn't. It's not quite as nice. But you can and it's important that you can to help you evade censorship in hostile environments.
