Very much on my mind lately, how to quantify, assign and verify reputation and trust. My intuition is that it would be based on some form of voluntary hierarchy. talks about the possibility of having a “celebrity”judge being selected by two parties in advance of a trade or transaction who could settle a dispute for a fee by signing with private key.

and other known figures are essentially already trusted and verified in the Nostr community. Those who are newer, not as active or unverified in meat space have a lot of work to do to get there. It seems like having some sort of system where a known identity can “vouch” for an as yet unknown identity at some point could help to expand the community and create a more trustworthy marketplace.

For example, if as a “hierarch” in Nostr was able to “vouch” that is a real person and not a bot or scammer and this was public, weighted and accessible then would be able to participate more fully in the Nostr ecosystem as trusted member. Obviously this would have to be done very carefully and reputations would be at stake. I imagine a number of techniques could be employed to accomplish this and some well known “Hierarchs” would emerge that would specialize in this. Essentially what Murray Rothbard talks about in his book about how a libertarian legal system would function absent a central authority. Anyone have any thoughts?
