But the smear campaigns like "he eats dogs" and "he's a conspiracy theorist" are powerful and the meme that "a 3rd party candidate can never win/you're wasting your vote" is even more powerful. That's the only reason Ross Perot lost in 1992. The exit polls showed Perot was the top choice for 40% of voters, but many votes for someone else because they thought he couldn't win. Had they voted for the best candidate, Perot would have been more votes than any other candidate.
