For fun, I’ve been looking into self hosting a mastodon instance at my own domain. Masto.host seems to be a good and reputable host. But the cost is pretty high. Mastodon servers have a lot going on. They need to scale with all activity including followers. The cost is about $20 a month for 4K users. There’s a pretty high cost in both money and convenience to break away from centralized services.
Anyway, I’m probably staying here on my cozy chirp.enworld.org server.
