I remember our ADSL days and BT. We too suffered a crackling noise on the line and they blamed everything. I ended up replacing expensive microfilters, my modem and removing the extensions over a course of months and they threatened us with big bills. Finally another engineer was sent and he blamed our power so I killed the ac at the breaker whilst he was plugged into our line with a USB modem of his into his laptop. He stated that it was our power causing the issues and we would be charged. To which I questioned how is it our power if it is off and your laptop is running off its own battery ? He scowled and said he'd check the exchange. Magically 15 minutes later the crackling was gone and our broadband was working again. The moral of the story don't ever trust BT and pay attention to what they claim they are doing.
